Girl with the Dragon Tattoo 2011 Trailer

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross are scoring the remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. The last time these two collaborated with director David Fincher they won an Oscar for The Social Network. The film also stars Christopher Plummer and Stellan Skarsgard. A long story short, it’s shaping up to be a slick film. Nevertheless, if you look on the filmoblogosphere you see everyone asking the same question, why is this film being remade – the Swedish version was released in 2009 and is of the highest quality. I can understand English-speaking audiences aren’t used to dubbed films, but regardless, it seems like a waste for all these actors to redo this film. I still can’t believe it’s being done in Sweden! I was expecting the story to be transposed on the backdrop of Los Angeles, or New York. Nevertheless, with smart casting and scoring decisions they seem to be making the attempt to improve upon perfection. Rooney Mara, the actress chosen to play the title role, will have her work cut out for her. Noomi Rapace has gained a following for her portrayal of Lisbeth Salander – she has however moved on to bigger things, and plays a role in the new Sherlock Holmes film. Here is the trailer for the new film, it’s terrible – it’s like a strobelight, but if you can finish watching it without convulsing and can remember and rearrange the scenes in your mind you get the impression that film might be good, you might also be able to guess at the plot, if you’re not familiar with the books yet.

The Thing 2011 Preview

Often the most frustrating things about previews is the fact that often, the releases being promoted aren’t exactly around the corner. Take the Dark Knight Rises teaser trailer, from the last post – that movie isn’t coming out for another year, assuming everything goes to plan. In December of last year, after watching a documentary about Antartica by Werner Herzog, I mentioned that there was a prequel to 1982′s The Thing by John Carpenter coming out, eventually. There was no teaser, but now there’s a trailer, and the opening date is within a reasonable distance – October 14, 2011. Only three months away! Or thereabouts. In any case, it’s not a remake, but a prequel tied tightly to the events of the initial film. Some people group prequels, remakes, reboots, spin-offs and the like into the same category – and this is the year of the sequel – but in this case it makes sense. From the looks of it the storyline is similar, the crew gets attacked and goes through the discovery, mutual distrust and hunting phases, but at the same time, which means the audience unfamiliar with the 1982 film will get the same wintry desolate goodness and the existing fans get the gory details as to what happened to the first crew. Check out the trailer.

Hereafter Preview

If last month was John Malkovich Appreciation Month, then this month belongs to Clint Eastwood. One of Hollywood’s most accomplished film makers has released a film entitled Hereafter. The story deals with mortality and the afterlife and the film stars Matt Damon.

I don’t mind drama but something that is sure to be so emotionally heavy is not normally something I am attracted to. However modern film finders have been as much a blessing as a curse in that I have too many films I’d like to watch, and lately I’ve been catching up on Dirty Harry and other films from later in Eastwood’s career. In any event I like films in which he is directing, and he is at the helm for this picture which means it should be both entertaining and poignant. Unfortunately it’s not likely we’ll get to see Eastwood on the other side of the camera, but it’s not ruled out either. In any case his directing is reason enough to see this film, in my opinion.

The Plame Game

I loves me a good political thriller. Fair Game is sure to be one. What with Sean Penn and Naomi Watts starring opposite one another in a dramatization of the Valerie Plame affair. Plame was outed by the White House in an attempt to discredit her husband Joseph Wilson, played by Sean Penn – a point of contention for some given his stance on the Iraq War. You remember his soiled and blood-soaked underwear speech? You can watch it on The Colbert Report. I also recommend the Meta-Free-Phor-All. I’m interested to see how it turns out, I’m optimisitc because Doug Liman is directing, and he has more experience with mindless action films (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, The Bourne Ultimatum). I don’t know how many action sequences this film will have – a lot of papers being burned and photos being taken, with a courtroom crescendo – but I’m sure it will entertain. Here is the preview.

Little Fockers Preview

The little trilogy that could. The first film had most people howling, but after the first sequel it was clear that the stern, never to be won over, ex-CIA  father-in-law routine was getting old. Nevertheless the film had no troubles covering production costs, and likely for that reason we’re being treated to Little Fockers. Part of me wants to write this movie off, but the other part says relax and enjoy the fucker/focker wordplay and Stiller-De Niro dynamic.

RED Preview

The previews section of this site was getting, admittedly, very thin. Enter RED: Retired Extremely Dangerous, the “we ain’t too old for this shit” Bruce Willis action comedy about retired CIA agents on the run from their former employer. I’m usually quite skeptical when it comes to these kinds of nostalgia tours, but the presence of John Malkovich will likely make this worth watching – I would have said the same of Morgan Freeman if it were not for Bucket List. Hellen Mirren is a good addition, and dare I say good looking? See for yourself, the trailer doesn’t promise a whole lot of laughter, but that might work in its favour.

Dinner for Schmucks Preview

This preview starts off a little weak, but towards the end of the trailer I start getting excited about this movie. Admittedly the premise is a little strange (and the ending of the film looks a little obvious), but anything with Paul Rudd and Steve Carell in it can’t be that bad, can it? The supporting cast looks wicked, with an appearance by Jeff Dunham the ventriloquist, a small part for Larry Wilmore from Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, etc. Jay Roach, of Austin Powers and Meet the Parents fame is directing this film, which is based on the French black comedy The Dinner Game. The film is due some time in July, check out the preview.

Robin Hood Preview

A while ago I saw the teaser for this film but now that the trailer is out it seems that a full blown preview for the upcoming Robin Hood is long overdue. In promoting this film they’re eager to remind us that Ridley Scott also directed Gladiator, but if you’re worried about his medieval credentials you can also watch Kingdom of Heaven. In any case the English folklore story is in capable hands, especially with Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett in leading roles.

Clash of the Titans Preview

Hot on the heels of that other movie about Greek mythology (which also features a Perseus or ‘Percy’ for short), comes one that is perhaps more traditional. Clash of the Titans is a remake of a previous film from 1981, based on the story of Perseus. Liam Neeson as Zeus, Ralph Fiennes as Hades? Giddy up. Check out the trailer, the movie comes out on April 2nd.

Wall Street 2 Preview

When I first saw the poster for ‘Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps’ with a noble-looking Shia LaBeouf sitting next to Michael Douglas I thought, ‘Really?’ Why a sequel and why have the still green (who some people don’t take seriously) LaBeouf carry the tune? But after a second thought and a look at the trailer, and given the recent financial crisis, perhaps it is the right time to get the smooth talking corporate raider extraordinaire Gordon Gekko out of the slammer (can you imagine anyone other than Michael Douglas in this role?). The movie is set on the backdrop of the 2008 stock market crash, where Gekko seems to be making a killing touting a book on the lecture circuit. Due to his criminal background no one heeds his warning about looming financial meltdown, instead he focuses his energies on winning back his estranged daughter. He enlists the help of Wall Street upstart Jacob ‘Jake’ Moore (LaBeouf), his daughter’s fiancé, who also has his own ‘beouf’ with his hedge fund manager. The film is due out in September this year, check out the trailer.
