John le Carré Documentary

At first glance this might seem like an odd post for this budding movie blog, which up until now has featured reviews and updates about more mainstream movies. But anyone who knows le Carré knows that a number of his books have been turned into successful motion pictures as well. Most recently The Constant Gardener hit the silver screen to great critical acclaim. Other titles include The Tailor of Panama, The Russia House and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold to name a few. For those who don’t know him, his real name is David John Moore Cornwell, and he himself has got a very interesting back story – and he won’t even tell you about the very interesting parts. He denies that anything of major interest happened in these years, but not everyone buys it. Imagination or experience, he wrote about the spy game in a way that was more contemplative, edgy and morally ambiguous. Monsieur le Carré is big in Germany, and it’s fitting that two Germans made a documentary about him. Unfortunately from what has been written about the film it doesn’t seem like any secrets will be pried from the tight-lipped English spook. King of Spies is being show at the Festival international du film sur l’art in Montreal, the original (in German) was released in 2008. Now to find a copy…
