John Malkovich Appreciation Month

October is John Malkovich appreciation month! The decision was made after reading the list of his top 10 movies on Rotten Tomatoes, and realizing I’ve only seen 2 of the 10 films featured in the article. For some reason The Killing Fields is listed there, his role in this film is very minor, but the rest like In the Line of Fire, Empire of the Sun, Dangerous Liasons, etc. are all stellar. Despite being a very versatile actor, he is simply fit for the role of the villain – he would have been perfect as the Vulture for Spider-Man. Regardless, the best has been saved for last, Being John Malkovich should be the highlight, but over his long career of 70 some-odd films and mini series you could easily make it the Year of the Malkovich.

  1. Hey A.J.,
I’ve been working my way through the many, many lists over at LAMb and saw that you recently joined — welcome! What is Cologne Germany like? I’m in San Francisco, California – it’s very cold and rainy here at the moment.

I like your Malkovich appreciation month article. He’s such a talented and diverse actor, though not even he could save the troubled Jonah Hex (2010) –> See my review here:

Shadow of the Vampire was pretty amazing and Disgraced is such a subtle, careful character study that I don’t think many actors working today could have done a better job than he did. I haven’t seen the Ogre (now on my list) but The Killing Fields is one of my all time favorites. Being John Malkovich was fun and silly and quirky; you could tell he loved making that picture. Dangerous Liasons is a classic and In the Line of Fire is O.K., not much of a character for him to fill out but he was convincing as an assassin on a mission. Of Mice and Men might just be one of his best early films and I don’t have much to say about the last two (Places in the Heart and I’m going Home).

Great article – thanks for sharing->

Hey Rory, thanks for your post. I won’t forget seeing Of Mice and Men in English class, back in high school. The man is a genious. Cologne is nice but October has been a rainy month here as well. Looking forward to the Ogre and your feedback.
