Nolan to Return for Batman Sequel

Without having officially confirmed anything, it appears that Christopher Nolan will indeed be directing the third installment of the relaunched Batman franchise. In an interview with Geoff Boucher of the L.A. Times, Nolan says he likes the idea of bringing the story to an end:

I’m very excited about the end of the film, the conclusion, and what we’ve done with the characters. My brother has come up with some pretty exciting stuff. Unlike the comics, these things don’t go on forever in film and viewing it as a story with an end is useful. Viewing it as an ending, that sets you very much on the right track about the appropriate conclusion and the essence of what tale we’re telling. And it harkens back to that priority of trying to find the reality in these fantastic stories. That’s what we do.

Indeed they do (the interview also touches on Nolan’s role in a reboot of Superman). Although it might sound silly some (including me) think that that is what makes the films such a success. In Batman Begins they did a fantastic job developing a backstory and making the characters believable.

His brother Jonathan is working hard to write an “epic story” for the final curtain, which will likely pick up where The Dark Knight left off, with Batman as a fugitive on the run from the city he saved. In terms of a villain, Nolan won’t confirm anything (of course) but The Riddler is being touted as a possibility by some.
