Prime Real Estate: Treasure Island

I was thinking of titling this post “A Tale of Two Movies” but I’ll probably need to save that reference as 19th century literature gets ransacked by Hollywood in the coming years. In actuality it’s a tale of six movies, but whatever. The point is that the film industry is a cutthroat business (cue throaty pirate laugh). Those who keep an eye on the industry will know that producer and writer Lionel Wigram was able to push through Sherlock Holmes faster than the competition – the competing film in this case would have starred Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen. It was reported back in April that Wigram was looking to beat out UK production company Ecosse on a new adaptation of Treasure Island. Now things are moving forward with a new big screen version of The Three Musketeers, but that film is also being produced by another studio. I can’t speak for Ecosse but apparently the other project is a more modern, 3D take on the classic story. Is Wigram unscrupulous or a staunch defender of the faith, protecting his corner of the market and ensuring hich quality films get made. Time will tell. Maybe Warner Brothers needs to start marking their territory faster, otherwise they’ll be fighting to get their version of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea out first. But seriously does anybody really expect to top Muppet Treasure Island?
