New Bond Film Called Skyfall

Skyfall Bond Film At a press conference in London a lot of details for the new Bond film were confirmed. It will be the 23rd of the franchise and will mark the 50th anniversary of the series. The name of the new film – a poorly kept secret – will be Skyfall. Daniel Craig reprising the role of James Bond, Javier Bardem will play the villain while Bérénice Marlohe and Naomie Harris will be the femmes fatale. There are a slew of other interesting actors joining the cast, including Albert Finney, Ralph Fiennes and Ben Whishaw. Judi Dench will be reprising the role of M (which wasn’t guaranteed). While the title was a well known fact, the rest of the story is being kept pretty quiet, while the general idea will be Bond’s loyalty to M being tested, the actors revealing little about their characters or the rest of the story – all that has been confirmed, is that it’s going to be a classic bond film, and it will have action in it. You might be thinking, “A Bond film with action? Get out of here,” and I’d indulge in your sarcasm, but the skepticism stems from the fact that Sam Mendes is directing – Sam Mendes of American Beauty fame. In any rate he confirmed the film will have action, and that action will take Bond from London, to the Highlands in Scotland, China and Istanbul. It’s been quite a gap since the last film but fans can now look forward to late October of 2012.

They Don't Have to Remake Millenium

I didn’t think that I’d be writing about Bond 23 and the Millenium trilogy at the same time but it turns out that Daniel Craig has signed on to play Mikael Blomkwist in the English remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Craig has time on his hands due to the troubles with getting the next installment in the Bond series off the ground. This casting decision has made me more optimistic toward this film. Craig has the right bearing and substance for this character. David Fincher is directing, and I’m hoping the style is more Zodiac than Fight Club. Nevertheless, the fact remains: this film doesn’t have to be remade.  For those who don’t know, despite the risk of becoming a hypocrite, I started raving about Stieg Larsson too. I say risk of hypocrisy because I know what it feels like, when you’ve been trying to get people onto something or someone for ages and they or it finally blows up, you get severely annoyed when everyone is raving about it, to you. It’s very likely I made it in before the cut, since the vast majority of people don’t read Hollywood trade papers or film blogs. Long story short, the original is fantastic, and up-to-date. It’s in no need of a redo, a reboot, or facelift. Nevertheless I understand how things work. The Norweigans get subtitles, the Germans get dubbing and the Americans get remakes. It’s not fair to single out Americans, as anglophones everywhere profit from the remake culture, but I still find it odd how a dubbed film, or most of them, doesn’t perform in the U.S. If it’s done well you hardly even notice – in Germany it’s unbelievable how well they synchronize. But given the way things are shaping up with this latest anglicization it looks to be worth the price of admission – just remember who told you about it first. But seriously if you are a fan of psychological thrillers or crime films do yourself a favour and watch the goddamn original.

Lament for a Bond Film

I filed this under news but anyone who actually reads the news will already know that Bond 23 has been put on ice due to the uncertainty surrounding MGM’s future.

That’s not the only reason to be singing the Bond blues, however. Aparrently this will be last curtain call for Dame Judi Dench as ‘M,’ whenever the film gets made. She got started in Goldeneye, which was also Pierce Brosnan’s debut, and has been the staple of the series ever since, starring in the subsequent reboot with Daniel Craig. The title of this post is overdramatic, of course there will be another Bond movie; MGM has a lot of good titles on the shelf and others still to be shot, a deal will be made and Bond will return, it’s a just a question of time. Nevertheless it puts everything into question, Sam Mendes was supposed to direct and Rachel Weisz was being considered as the villain and mastermind behind Quantum.

It seemed all the pieces were in place but alas we’ll likely have to wait until well beyond the already not so near release date of 2012. It’s really a shame because the series was just starting to take off; Q and Moneypenny would likely have been brought into the mix. Speaking of the former, I would love to see John Cleese fully take over as Q. However, someone floated the idea of Billy Connolly and I think his Scottish temperament would be a good check against the still up and coming double-0-agent. I’m torn, but I’ve got time to mull it over, as do the producers.

Bond 23 Update

Things appear to be moving forward on Bond 23: MGM has signed a Bond girl and Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Road to Perdition) has apparently agreed to direct. The script is also finished; the story will be set in Afghanistan. Read the short Bond 23 update from WorstPreviews or get a more exhaustive 007 status report from Obsessed with Movies.TopOfBlogs
